Matagami ecodestination, an amazing place for those with a love for the great outdoors.

At the heart of the action

Obviously, a town located at the heart of such a vast territory gives a lot of importance to outdoor leisure activities. Even inside town limits, it is possible to walk some 3.5 km of hiking trails in the forest, leading to an observation tower, rapids and a terrace, while viewing a diversity of wildlife and plants. Wildlife is abundant, which makes Matagami a paradise for hunters and fishermen. Nine major lakes and rivers are accessible within a short distance from Matagami. During the summer, the length of daylight which is greater than in southern areas, allows full advantage of the golf course, tennis courts, camping grounds and beach. Following the traditional hunting and fishing seasons, winter comes with ice fishing and the reign of snowmobiles. 40 km of local trails lead to federated trails and are accessible several weeks longer than in southern regions since winters are longer. The same applies to cross-country skiing which will surely make the most demanding skiers very happy!

Hunting and Fishing

Hunters and fishermen can take advantage of exceptional locations where game and fish are found in abundance. The nine major lakes and rivers surrounding Matagami provide enough space so that each one can have his or her own little spot.

Since Matagami is located close to Quebec hunting zones 16, 17 and 22, a special attention must ge given to regulations, since each zone has its particularities regarding mainly the opening and closing dates for hunting and fishing. Big game hunters will be especially happy in this territory where moose, black bear and even caribou are not rare. Small game hunters will also find what they are looking for since they can hunt hare and four kinds of partridges.

Fishing will most certainly provide you with some big thrills. Catching walleyes is quite a challenge. That fish can mainly be found in the lakes Matagami, Goéland and Olga. The ice fishing experience is unique. Pulling out a pike weighing some fifteen pounds is one true fishing story that you will remember for a long time.

We know that Matagami is a real paradise for hunting and fishing aficionados. Matagami is also the ideal stop over for those who are travelling further north, to James Bay territory where great herds of caribous still roam free. Check your map for our exact location to better plan your trip.
