The Lake Matagami recreational zone is a unspoiled natural environment with the main purpose of developing natural resources from the area surrounding Matagami. The zone covers by itself, more than 400 km², including some 30 kilometres of paths that can be explored by foot, mountain bike, snowshoes or even cross-country skiing. These paths are accessible all year long.

The first path is called " Sentier du mont Laurier " and covers a distance of 4 kilometres, its degree of difficulty is listed as intermediate. The second path is called " Parcours des sommets " and it covers a distance of 10 kilometres, its degree of difficulty is listed as difficult. The last one but not the least is " Sentiers des collines " and this one covers a distance of 16 kilometres, its degree of difficulty is listed as difficult.

Inside the Lake Matagami recreational zone, it is possible to observe beaches, mountains, forest of conifers, taiga and, at some places, tundra. Furthermore, several beaver dams are visible, various imposing landscapes, magnificent geologic phenomena such as, thousand years old mushrooms as well as the oldest mountains of North America. Naturally, all the wildlife as well as the northern vegetation are of exceptional wealth. Indeed, according to the seasons, the flavour of small wild fruits is a true enjoyment.

The Lake Matagami recreational zone is accessible all year long, from sunrise to sundown. The accesses for the footpaths, from de James Bay Road, are at Km 10, 12 and 18. On the other hand, to have access to the very zone, you can to go directly to Km 32 and 36.

At the Km 37 of the James Bay Road, located inside the Lake Matagami recreational zone, you will find the Campground of Matagami Lake opened from mid-June to Labour Day.
